Semiosis acts in time

In semiosis, what persists is not a quality, but a dynamic relation. Semiosis acts in time across generations, or in space across vastly different geographical contexts even when original objects of communication and communicational agents are not present.

This is neither some mysterious form of action at a distance, nor transmission of some qualitative property of a thing.
