Determining the ontological status of artworks involves determining the logical conditions under which a work of art comes into semiosis. The stability (persistence conditions), and also the conditions under which works of art are historically identified (identity conditions), should be described in terms of an ontology of process.
Any ontology of an artwork should be described as an ontology of semiosis, the sign action. This is an important component of our approach — not the sign itself but the sign in action.
